Knox County, OH - OB: Steel bollards are being removed from road crossings along the Kokosing Gap Trail. This is a major safety improvement for trail users and no small task for the volunteers who are doing the work, as these large steel bollards were installed throughout the entire length of the 13.4 mile of trail.
For those who may be oblivious to the bollard danger, read 'The Ongoing Trail Bollard Hazard.' Also, for trail managers and others who believe that Flex-Posts in the middle of a multi-use trail are safe, see 'Are Flex Posts Safer Than Stationary Bollards?
Kudos go out to the trail manager(s) for taking this action. It demonstrates that they are aware of the danger that trailside bollards pose, as well as the bollards that were placed directly on the trail -- which had already been removed years earlier.
Now that the Kokosing Gap Trail volunteers are taking this unprecedented step (unprecedented in Ohio, to my knowledge) to remove all trailside bollards, perhaps they will be given the greenlight to finish the job by removing the flex-posts at road crossings as well. It is the only deliberately placed hazard that remains at crossroads along the trail.
