"Crews have been working for the past couple months to establish a 6,400-foot extension to the trail starting from an existing parking lot about a half mile northeast of the intersection of Carmody Boulevard and Ohio 73. That portion of the project, which cost $500,000, will stop a couple hundred feet from the Breiel Boulevard/Ohio 73 intersection." A 2.5-mile trail segment now connects the Tipp City trail with finished trail at Ross Road to the south. From the Piqua Daily Call, "The Miami County Park District in collaboration with Monroe Township, Tipp City and Five Rivers Metro Park will officially open the newest segment of [the GMRT] bike trail extending from Kyle Park in Tipp City to Ross Road at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12 at the Timmer Pavillion in Kyle Park. "This is an important project for bicycle enthusiasts in the Miami Valley as it connects the Miami and Montgomery County bikeway systems," said J. Scott Myers the deputy director for the Miami County Park District. This 2.5 mile segment of the trail runs along the old Erie Canal and goes through a tunnel under Ross Road to connect to the Montgomery County bikeway." The sinkhole is about a quarter-mile from an earlier sinkhole near the bike path that runs along the [Great] Miami River. "Crews spent Friday repairing the damage, which officials said was caused by the pipes' age and heavy rainfall over the past two weeks." Towpath Section Closed Sept. 13-169/14/10 by Ohio Bikeways"...The Miami County Park District said the "tow path" section of the Great Miami Recreational Trail will be closed beginning Monday, September 13. It will remain closed until workers are finished making some repairs to the bike way. "Bikers or walkers will not be able to use the path between Tipp City and Dye Mill Road. "Crews will be digging up about 350-feet of that bike way. Signs will be posted about this closure. It should reopen by Thursday, September 16." This section of the Miami River Bike Trail will reopen to the public Monday, September 20th at 5 pm. "This bike trail closure is due to a contractor performing deck demolition in that area. Bike traffic is asked to use the sidewalk along Edwin C. Moses Boulevard as a detour during this closure. Signs will be in place prior to the work zone to alert bike traffic of the upcoming trail closure. "ODOT has a “Target: Zero” goal for any and all safety hazards. To help ensure the safety of the construction workers as well as the traveling public, bicyclists should remain alert and reduce their speed and while passing through the work zone." When complete, bikers, walkers, runners and skaters will be able to follow the path of the Great Miami River and Miami and Erie Canal as it meanders through the towns of Tipp City, Troy and Piqua in beautiful Miami County. The trail links parks, historic sites, and the river corridor with communities and provides an excellent venue for exercise, family fun and enjoyment. Southern DevelopmentA 28-mile [southern] extension of the Great Miami River Recreation Trail is planned from Crains Run Park in southern Montgomery County to the City of Hamilton. The Great Miami River Recreation Trail follows the Great Miami River and the towpath of the Miami and Erie through Warren and Butler County through the cities of Franklin, Middletown and Hamilton. When complete, the trail will connect cyclists, walkers and skaters with over 150 miles of existing trail in Montgomery, Greene, Clark, Warren and Clermont Counties.
