The 2.7 mile gravel trail that runs through Elmore, Ohio and crosses the Portage River is destined to become part of the North Coast Inland Trail. However, at the time of our last visit it was a Pedestrians Only Trail.

Plans are in the works to bring the N.C.I.T. to town. In fact, in 2005 the ODNR web site reported that the Sandusky County Park District was awarded $375,000 toward engineering and construction of a 10-mile paved section of the trail from Fremont to Lindsey to Elmore.

Elmore and Zoar, Ohio are the only two towns (to our knowledge) that currently do not allow bikes to utilize their trails, despite the fact that both are planned parts of major multi-use trail systems. (The Zoar section is part of the Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath.) We are not bashing these communities for excluding bikes. Far from it. We believe each community that builds and maintains its own trails has a right to utilize them as they see fit.

So for the moment this page is a placeholder of sorts with some general info on the N.C.I.T.

The North Coast Inland Trail will eventually span Ohio and connect to 3 additional states. It will stretch east to west to connect with Pennsylvania and Indiana, while a future connector to Michigan may also be in the works. Checkout completed sections of this trail network. Or view a map of the full scope of this ambitious project.

This picture shows the former rail line path directly through Elmore and past the old Elmore Station. Notice the row of utility poles and grain silos that define the route.
